DescriptionA Chevrolet sedan with a sign on the windshield that reads "MEALS / ON / WHEELS - A HOME-CARE / SERVICE / FOR SHUT-INS / TEL. 249-7371" is parked by the wall of a brick building. A sign by the door reads: "YMCA / OF / GREATER HARTFORD / MEALS ON WHEELS". Two women and a man stand in the doorway. One of the women holds a clipboard. An African-American man wearing eyeglasses and a janitor's uniform lifts a metal canister that appears to contain hot meals. A woman hands a basket containing a thermos and what appear to be lunch bags to another woman seated in the car. All of the women wear dresses, nylon stockings, and high heeled shoes.
NotesSubject Note: Hartford's Meals-on-Wheels program began in 1960. Meals for the elderly were prepared at Hartford Hospital's Jefferson House and delivered by volunteers. When Jefferson House closed in 1963, the program was relocated to the YMCA on Pearl Street. Anne Fiore, who appears in this photograph, was the director of the Meals-on-Wheels program.
