DescriptionIn one photograph, young men sit on a grassy lawn beneath signs that read: "EMERALD CITY" "MEXICAN / COLETUS $10 / from / MICHOUCAN, MEJICO" Some youths sit in folding lawn chairs. An American flag is draped from a tent in the background. Some men have beards and mustaches; most have long hair. They wear cut-off jeans and are barefoot and bare-chested.
In the second photograph, a crowd of young men walk down a paved road. All have long hair and wear jeans and tee shirts. Some carry sleeping bags or backpacks. One young man wearing eyeglasses looks at his wristwatch.
NotesSubject Note: A 1970 rock concert at the Powder Ridge Ski Area in Middlefield was cancelled after gubernatorial candidate Wallace Barnes toured the site and brought federal action against the festival promoters. Barnes was shocked by the open sale of narcotics and by filth and pollution at the concert site. Although the scheduled entertainment did not take place, some impromptu performances were given by groups using their own sound equipment. Following the cleanup of litter and garbage, the New York Rock and Roll Ensemble gave a concert to benefit the Regional Training Center Camp for Retarded Children. (Finlay 5/17/2011)
