DescriptionCommercial block with louvered shutters, a roof balustrade, with iron and wooden balconies. Striped awnings are above storefronts on the ground floor. Signs read: "U.S.Hotel / Cafe" "Oysters" "Cigars - F. W. Crygier - Cigars" "First National Bank" Fruits and vegetables are displayed on the sidewalk at the left. Men stand nearby. Horse-drawn carriages and wagon are in the street. One wagon contains milk cans. A trolley with signs that read "Windsor & Rainbow" and "Windsor Poquonock Rainbow" is in the left foreground. The building with Doric columns and a pediment in the right foreground is the Hartford National Bank.
NotesSubject Notes: According to the 1896 Hartford City Directory, Frank H. Crygier had a cigar and tobacco shop at 48 State Street; the United States Hotel was located at 26 State Street. The oyster sign probably refers Thomas A. Honiss, wholesale and retail dealer in oysters, located at 24 and 30 State Street.
The First National Bank was located at 50 State Street. From about 1896 to 1899 it moved to 307 Main Street while its new building was being constructed at 50 State Street.
The Hartford National Bank was first incorporated as the Hartford Bank in 1792. They opened a new building in 1912 on Main Street, and the name became Hartford-Aetna National Bank.
