DescriptionBrick commercial building in dilapidated condition. The sign above the door is illegible. Signs stenciled on either side of the double door read: "243." A cellar hatchway is at the right. Wires run from a utility pole to a box on the wall to a window. A bearded man is at an open window. Some windows are broken. A paved sidewalk is beside the dirt street. A carriage with a fringed top is at the right. A horse, blurred from movement, is at the left.

NotesHistorical Note: The inscription on the back of the photograph was probably done by Samuel Taylor, talking about himself as clerk for Watkinson & Bartholomew. Watkinson & Bartholomew were cotton manufacturers, located at 111 State Street in 1851.
