DescriptionHorse-drawn vehicles and a trolley are on a broad city street. A few men and women walk in the street and on the paved sidewalks. Commercial buildings are on the left and right. Utility poles line the street. A church and a war memorial are in the background.
Label TextThis ca. 1900 postcard shows the center of downtown New Britain. Two 1861 photographs of the same location show Civil War troops assembled in the square in the position occupied by the Soldiers Monument in this much later view.
NotesThe monument in the background is the Soldiers' Monument, a Civil War memorial designed by Ernest Flagg (1857-1947) and erected in 1899. (Finlay 9/13/2011)
