DescriptionInterior and exterior views of the Vienna Bakery and adjoining businesses on Main Street, New Britain. Some photographs include employees, including Frank Guenther, Mr. Graff, James B. Grace, George Hodge, Jim Keogh, Jake Weher, Nan Gorman, Maud Manning, and Frank Guenther's wife and daughter, Hulda and Anna, and their dog Prince. Signs read "Gorman's / New York Art Store" "McCabe / Plumber" "Felt & Norton" "Hart's Bazaaar" "Vienna Bakery" "City / Bakery / Ice / Cream" Merchandise is displayed in store windows. In one photograph, small American flags are displayed in a store window. Many of the male employees have mustaches and wear aprons. Ovens, barrels, and cooking utensils are visible in the interior views.
NotesSubject Note: Frank Guenther was the proprietor of the Vienna Bakery, located at 159 Main Street, New Britain. He was born in Germany in 1851 and immigrated to the United States in 1873. In 1877, he married Hulda [Groppe?], who was born in Germany in 1856 and came to the United States in 1871. The couple had at least three children: Hulda, Bertha, and Anna. The girls worked as salesgirls in the bakery. Frederick Groppe, a nephew born in 1893, was living with the couple in 1900. The family lived at 155 Main Street, just down the street from the bakery.
