DescriptionTwo men are standing on the deck of a fishing boat. A third man, who appears to be African-American, is standing above them, below the wheelhouse. Two additional men are in the wheelhouse. A bell hangs from the wheelhouse. A dredge containing oysters is being raised at the right. Chains are attached to the dredge. Bushel baskets and oysters are in the foreground. The sea is n the background.
NotesSubject Note: An inscription on the reverse of the picture identifies the boat as being either The Bivalve or the The Thimble. The Bivalve and the Thimble Islands were oyster boats that operated out of Stony Creek during the 1960s. These boats used steel dredges which were dragged across the oyster beds to scoop up oysters, then raised and emptied on deck for sorting. (Malley 10/8/2010)
