DescriptionA man with a beard and mustache lies on his back on the ground. His upper body rests on a rock and his hands are evidently tied behind him. He wears a doublet, breeches, hose, and shoes with buckles. A young Native American woman wearing a fringed blanket, bracelets, arm bands, and a gold band in her long hair bends over him. He is threatened by two other Native Americans. One man wears a loincloth and feathers; the other wears leggings, and what appears to be a tunic. Both men have tattoos. A group of Native Americans on the right, apparently led by a woman wearing a feathered headdress and holding a long pipe in her hand, look on. Some are seated on what appears to be an animal skin. Wooden walls in the left and right background appear to be part of a fort or stockade. Smoke billows from a small fire in the distance. An empty basket is in the left foreground.
