DescriptionDouble edged straight bladed sword with a ridge that runs along the length of the center of the blade. The blade is marked on both sides, with the obverse side being stamped with "U S N / 1845" and the reverse side being stamped with "N.P. Ames." The hilt is made of cast brass, and features a wide flat piece of brass that extends from the pommel to the blade for the knuckle bow and guard. The edges of the guard are slightly thicker for increased strength. The hilt terminates behind the blade with a disk finial that is stamped on both sides. The obverse side of the disk is stamped "J L" inside of an oval stamp, and "R C" on the reverse side. The hilt features numerous stamps including "14" on the guard to the right of the blade, and stamped along the knuckle bow is (T to B): "4 D / N 23 / 154 (upside-down)." The base of the knuckle bow is also pierced for a sword knot. The grips are cast to resemble scales, with three rivets along the handle to secure the tang of the blade. The pommel is oval in shape and features an image of an eagle on both sides, with a rivet at the base to secure the tang of the blade.
