NotesSubject Note: The Consolidated flying boat PBY Catalina was widely used during the 1930s and 1940s. During World War II, PBYs were used by all branches of the United States military and in the armed forces of many other nations. They were used in anti-submarine warfare, patrol bombing, convoy escorts, search and rescue missions, and cargo transport. Some PBYs were still in use by the military as late as the 1980s. They continued to be used as airtankers in aerial firefighting in the 21st century. (Finlay 4/1/2010)
