DescriptionA floatplane with United States insignia has just landed in the ocean near an inflatable rubber raft with two soldiers wearing life jackets in it. A man stands on the wing of the airplane holding on a rope attached to a life preserver ring. An artillery shell has just landed in the water beside the plane causing a large splash. A second floatplane in the sky approaching the scene is under fire with bursts of smoke in the air around it. Low-lying islands are in the background.
NotesSubject Note: The Vought Kingfisher OS2U floatplane was used in scouting, observation, and air-sea rescue operations. It was the primary ship-based catapult-launched observation aircraft used by the United States Navy during World War II. The prototype of the OS2U was developed in 1938; the last OS2U in use was retired by the Cuban Navy in 1959. (Finlay 4/1/2010)
