DescriptionSampler worked in medium brown, dark brown, dark blue, light brown, light blue, dark green, red, rust, cream, mint, and pink silk threads on a plain-woven linen ground in cross stitches. The sampler is squarish, oriented horizontally. It is laid out with seven rows of three alphabets and the numbers 1 through 9 followed by a zero, over an inscription, over a narrow band of pictorial motifs. The inscription is "Caroline Julia Tuckers/ Samplar [sic] Wrought Apr 18/ 1844 in the 12th yr of her age/ Hartford Ct". The narrow band of pictorial motifs include, from left to right, a heart, a watering can, a bowl or basket, a watering can, and a heart. Certain lines of alphabets are separated by straight, narrow borders. There is a four-sided narrow border.
The sampler probably has a double-turned hem on all four sides. The portion of the top edges is visible; the other three edges of the sampler are not visible. There is a narrow mat. The sampler has a narrow mat and is in a modern frame.
Letters and Numbers (.b): There are three alphabets. The letters are uppercase script in alphabet 1, uppercase block in alphabet 2, and lowercase block in alphabet 3. The letters J and U are present in all alphabets. The letter H in the second alphabet is unusual; it appears to be a double H.
Stitches (.b): The sampler is worked in cross stitches over two threads.
Condition (.b): The sampler probably has light to moderate fading. There is a narrow mat. The sampler is in a modern frame.
