DescriptionPhotograph album contains formal and informal portraits and photographs of people and places around Hartford, Connecticut at the turn of the century.

Photographs include the steamboats S.S. Columbia and City of Springfield, and several sailboats moored on the Connecticut River. There are several views of factories and farms along the river as well as a railroad bridge. One photograph is of the Goodspeed Opera House.

Included in the scenes of Hartford are views of the Stanley Manufacturing factory, and the storefronts of A. Mugford Engraver on Wood and the Furniture Emporium. The storefronts of T. Sission & Co., Tyler Post No. 50 G. A. R., and the Sitting Rooms and Parlor of the Sister Dora Society are decorated with banners and flags. Other views of Hartford include the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Arch, the Capitol, and scenes of downtown Hartford following the Blizzard of 1888. There are also several photographs of fire engines.

Included in the photograph album is a photograph of a one room schoolhouse with the teacher and her students posing on the schoolhouse steps. There is also a photograph of men playing ball.

There are several photographs of railroad trains, railroad engines, and railroad bridges. There is a photograph several people standing on snow piles left by the blizzard at a railroad crossing.

Several scenes of the Farmington River are also in the album including remnants of the stone aqueduct. There are also several views of small waterfalls and rapids.

Many photographs are of industrial equipment such as turbines, conveyors, and boilers. There is a photograph of a printing press by J. H. Cranston of Norwich, Connecticut.

There are several views of private homes and families, including children, infants and family pets, sitting or standing in front of dwellings or posing in groups outdoors. Some photographs are of a greenhouse and flowers.

NotesSubject notes: 1967.89.1.13 is a photograph of the City of Springfield steamboat on the Connecticut River.

1967.89.1.51 is a cyanotype of a single railroad engine on the railroad tracks.

1967.89.1.61 is a photograph of a one room schoolhouse with the teacher and children standing on the front steps. All of the children are wearing hats or bonnets.

1967.89.1.94 is a photograph of a young girl sitting on the floor with her doll. Her doll is lying in a crib next to her. There is also doll furniture in the photograph.
