NotesSubject Notes: 1946.10.0.1 is a formal photograph of William Buckingham of Norwich, Connecticut, Buckingham was elected Governor of Connecticut in 1858 and served seven terms. Known as "Connecticut's Lincoln", Buckingham was governor when Fort Sumter was fired on. Although the General Assembly was not in session at the time of the attack, Buckingham immediately responded on his own authority to Lincoln's call for volunteers and issued a proclamation to the residents of Connecticut.

Close your manufàctories and workshops, turn aside from your farms and your business, leave for a while your families and homes, meet face to face the enemy of your liberties.” (Governor William Buckingham, Governor State of Connecticut, Proclamation, 1862.)

1946.10.0.21 is a formal portrait of Henry C. Deming of Hartford, Connecticut. Deming served in the legislator from 1859 to 1861 and then as Mayor of Hartford from 1854 to 1858 and 1860-1862. Deming enlisted in the United States Army in September 1861 and served as a colonel of the Twelfth Regiment, Connecticut Volunteers. He served as mayor of New Orleans under martial law from October 1862 to February 1863, when he resigned from the Army.
