Label TextThis charming portrait of a "Young American Sailor" is actually based on an 1846 oil painting by Franz Xaver Winterhalter depicting the son of Queen Victoria of Great Britain, Albert Edward, Prince of Wales. Most purchasers of this popular print probably were unaware of the royal birth of the original subject. American lithographers often derived their compositions from reproductions of paintings by prominent contemporary artists or Old Masters.
