DescriptionMen, women, and children walk on the sidewalks in front of a six-story department store. Signs on the store read: "THE HOWLAND DRY GOODS CO."; a sign on a marquee over the main entrance reads "HOWLAND DRY GOODS COMPANY". The store has decorative columns, friezes, and cornice, and large plate glass windows. Trucks, apparently delivery trucks, are exiting from what appears to be a garage at the right of the store. Automobiles are in the street.
NotesSubject Note: According to Dave Ransom in his "Biographical Dictionary of Hartford Architects," Allen was responsible for part of the design of the Howland Dry Goods store in Bridgeport (p. 15).
