DescriptionTin tavern sign, painted on both sides. Side 1 has an American eagle with a red, white, and blue shield holding arrows and olive branches, and reads: "A. Lewis Inn". Side 2 has the Connecticut state shield with grapevines, a punchbowl with floral designs, and two goblets and a decanter filled with wine. This side also reads: "A. Lewis Inn".
Label TextThis rare surviving metal tavern sign is made of a sheet of iron coated with tin and painted on both sides. Bristol was a center for tin painting and decorating, and many of the painters at the time were women. Like the David Loomis sign (1958.10.1), this one shows goblets and a decanter filled with wine, but it also depicts the Connecticut state shield with its grapevines and a punchbowl with floral designs.
