DescriptionSquare cracker, or biscuit, with holes. A handwritten paper label adhered to one side reads: "Hard Tack / Issued to me in front of / Petersburg Va Sept. 12, 1864 / Stephen Walkley Jr. / Private, Co. A. 7th Conn. Vols."
Label TextThis piece of hardtack was issued to Stephen Walkley, Jr. in Petersburg, Virginia in 1864. He saved it as a souvenir, and it still survives today as a testament to the hardiness of the rations Civil War soldiers received.
