DescriptionDark green wool two-piece boy's suit, consisting of a jacket with sewn-in vest, and a pleated skirt. The jacket (.a) is trimmed with black soutache. It is in a cut-away style, revealing the vest, which closes with seven black fabric-covered buttons. The jacket has a narrow collar and two pockets over the hips; the vest also has two pockets. The jacket is lined with black cotton sateen; the vest is lined with tan cotton sateen. The skirt (.b) is set into the waistband via 3 3/8-inch-wide box pleats. The waistband is lined with a pink and white printed, striped cotton; it is then covered with another band of sturdy white cotton, which is sewn along the lower edge and open along the top edge. This band is stitched with buttonholes so that it can be attached to the shirt (no longer extant). The skirt opens down the center back with a hidden button placket, with four black-enameled ferrous metal buttons and two black twill-woven silk-covered shank buttons at the waistband.

NotesHistorical Note: Family history asserted that this "green broadcloth kilts" had been given to Lawrence Eddy (1892-1980) by his great aunt, Sarah Walker Adams. However, the styling of the suit dates it to the 1870s, about a generation too early for Lawrence Eddy to have worn it. This dating suggests his father, Samuel Alden Eddy (b. 1860), as a more plausible original owner. (Schoelwer 3/21/2002)
