DescriptionThis photograph album is from the collection of albums from the Estate of Amy Tatro.

The photograph album consists of photographs of the Heinze and Tatro family and friends. Most photographs are of unidentified people. Many of those photographs are formal studio portraits of men, women, and children. Some photographs show men in uniform including a soldier, a police officer, a hockey player, and trolley conductors. Some are wedding photographs while other formal studio photographshow men and women holding books or walking canes. The women wear dresses with beading, pins on the collars, and hats with flowers. Photographs of children show small girls and infants. The first two photographs are of Chauncy Olcott, a famous tenor singer.
NotesSubject notes: 2006.49.2.1 is a photograph of Chauncy Olcott, also known as "The Irish Tenor." Chauncy was a famous singer and comedian who performed in many plays. On September 26, 1895 he performed in the comedy drama "The Irish Artist" at the Proctor's Opera House in Hartford. He also performed at the Hartford Opera House in November 1897 in the play "Sweet Inniscarra." It is possible that Meta Heinze included Olcott's photograph in her album because she was present at one of his performances. (The Hartford Courant (1887-1922); September 26, 1895. The Hartford Courant (1887-1922); November 1, 1897.)

2006.49.2.8 and 2006.49.2.9 are photographs of men dressed in conductors' uniforms. Alexander Tatro, the husband of Meta Heinze, was a conductor for the Hartford Street Railroad, the Hartford trolley company. These two photographs are possibly portraits of two of Alexander's coworkers. ("Trolley Employees Dance," The Hartford Courant (1887-1992); November 13, 1903)

Many photographs are of Meta and Alexander Tatro. Alexander was born in Canada in 1868 and immigrated to the United States in 1870. Meta Heinze was born in Sweden and moved to the United States in 1880. She came with her sister and they worked as maids for wealthy families around Hartford such as the Ponds. The Ponds House in Elizabeth Park is named after them. She married Alexander in 1900. Her daughter Amy was born in 1906. (1910 Federal Census, Hartford Courant, Sept 12, 2004)
