DescriptionAmerican troops attack a walled city or fortress. Two officers on horseback are at the left. One man wears a cocked hat with a plume and points towards the right with his sword. Soldiers in uniform holding rifles with fixed bayonets charge towards the right and climb up the walls. One man waves an American flag. A second flag is at the left. One man stands on the top of the wall and raises his hat. Bayonets, rifles, and smoke are visible at the top of the wall. Mexican troops advance through an arched gate in the right foreground. An American soldier appears to be in the process of beheading one of the Mexican soldiers with his sword. Other men lie dead or wounded on the ground. A broken cannon carriage is also in the right foreground. Stone buildings are in the background. Some buildings have round towers, turrets, and crenellations. One building has a cross on its roof.
