DescriptionA towboat, left unfinished by the artist, is towing a barge past an island with a lighthouse on it. A man stands on the stern of the barge and a large American flag flies from it. The barge is towing a small rowboat. Additional buildings and trees are on a bluff above the lighthouse. A strip of sandy beach backed by trees is to the left. Hills are in the background. Birds, probably gulls, fly just above the water.
Label TextAttributed to Jurgan Frederick Huge (German-American, 1809-1878), this view shows a barge passing Fayerweather Island lighthouse near Bridgeport Harbor. While the barge is quite detailed, the towboat is intentionally unfinished, suggesting Huge painted it in hopes of convincing a towboat firm to buy the work and have it "customized" with one of its own vessels depicted.
