DescriptionA rectangular wooden box with a hinged lid. The box has paper affixed around the edges, a paper label affixed to the right end, and a paper tax stamp around the box on the left end. A ribbon runs through a hole it the top of the box to lift the lid. The paper label on the right end is printed in black ink, and a portion of it on the lid reads, "J.W.L.". On the side the label has a bust-length portrait of a man with a beard. Below the picture the label reads, "[Accor]ding to Act of Congress in the year 1863, by J. W. Loomis, in the Clerk's Office of the District / Court of the United States for the District of Connecticut."
The tax label around the end of the box is printed in black ink. It has the months of the year running along the top of the label, and numbers from 1 to 31 running along the bottom. On the left end of the label, which is on the front of the box, there is an open box with "INSPECTOR" printed at the bottom right, with two additional black ink stamps reading, "Saml. White" [in script]; and, "1st COLL. DIST., Ct."
At the center of the label which is on the top of the box, there is a seal in the design of the label with "US" in the center, and encircling this is, "INTER REVENUE / INSPECTORS STAMP". The year 1966 is printed on either side of this design. At the left end of the label, which is on the back of the box it reads, "100 CIGARS"
The lid of the box is hinged on the interior with blue paper, and the hinge is almost completely broken. The interior has part of the paper liners still attached around the top of the box.
