DescriptionNeedlework picture (.a) worked in blue-green, light medium and dark green, cream, gold, khaki and tan silk threads, dark and light brown, and blue-green chenille threads, light medium and dark blue paint and ink on a plain-woven white silk ground, using satin stitch and other stitches. The needlework picture shows a young woman in an ankle-length dress holding a basket on one arm and with a small child to the left; the woman and child stand beneath a tree. To the left is a house with a small window and a chimney. To the right, in the background, is a small town with a church building. The figure of the woman and child and the sky are hand-painted directly onto the ground. The town is drawn in using black ink or pencil.
The ground has nail holes around the edges, but is not on a stretcher or in a frame. The embroidery is accompanied by a backboard with an original printed label (.c) and a frame (.d) (replaced) painted black with gilded decoration.
Stitches: The primary stitch on the needlework picture is satin stitch; it also includes encroaching satin, long and short, and french.
Condition: The needlework is not on a stretcher or in the frame. The ground has nail holes around the edges, and some splits and tears to the ground near the edge. The top edge of the ground has accumulated dirt.
