DescriptionUnfinished family register worked in dark green, medium brown, dark blue, light brown, salmon, light green (bright), yellow, and cream silk threads on a plain-woven linen ground using cross stitches. The register is squarish, oriented horizontally. It is laid out with three rows of two alphabets, and the numbers 1 through 9, over five rows of family record information, over two inscriptions, over a pictorial motif of a two-story house. The first inscription is "Ellen E Moore's Sampler Aged 9 years Ad 1838". The second inscription is "Jesus permit thy gracious name to stand/ As the first efforts of an infants hand/ And while her fingers ore this canvass move/ Engage her tender heart to seek thy love". Certain lines of alphabets, numbers, and text are separated by various narrow borders, including straight and meandering lines. There is a decorative four-sided border; the left and right borders comprise a flower and vine design, the top border is a multi-colored geometric design, and the bottom border is a bold greek key design. The register is unfinished.

The register has a 3/16- - 2/8-inch double-turned hem on the top and bottom edges, and selvedges at the left and right side edges. The register is not framed.

Letters and Numbers: There are two alphabets and the numbers 1-9. The letters are uppercase script in alphabet 1, and uppercase block in alphabet 2. The letters J and U are present in both alphabets. All lowercase letters with descenders, such as the letter 'g', are placed so the descender does not extend below the baseline.

Stitches: The principal stitch on the register is cross stitch over two threads; it is also worked in cross stitch over one thread. All uppercase letters in text are in script form.

Condition: There are stains, particularly in the lower right corner of the register. The register has minimal fading. The register is unfinished. It is not framed.
