DescriptionThe sihouette is a full-length profile portrait of a man, standing, facing right. He holds a top hat in his hand. The silhouette is mounted on a lithographic background that depicts a porch with an iron balustrade and steps leading down towards a lake. A vine grows around a column at the far left. Trees and hills or mountains are in the background.
NotesSubject Note: Reverend Joel Hawes (1789-1867) graduated from Brown University in 1813, and from Andover Theological Seminary in September 1817. He preached at the First Church in Hartford on the first Saturday following his graduation; on 13 January 1818, he was invited to stay as the Pastor. Reverend Hawes remained the Pastor until his death. He became ill while preaching in Gilead, Connecticut, on 2 June 1867, and he died three days later.
