DescriptionFull length silhouette portrait of man facing right. He holds a top hat by his hip; his right arm is slightly bent. He is wearing a coat and trousers. He is standing on a sidewalk on a city street with near the corner of a brick building. A four-story building topped with a rotunda is at the right. Additional buildings are in the background. These include a building, with the entrance at the corner, a neo-classical facade, and a shadowy figure near the top of the steps.
NotesSubject Note: In 1789 James Ward (1768-1856) opened a clock and silversmith shop, and in 1790, he partnered with Miles Beach in the gold and silversmith's trade. By 1804 Ward had gone into partnership with Roswell Bartholomew of Harwinton, Connecticut. During the War of 1812, Ward was appointed Commissary-General of Connecticut, and was given the rank of Colonel, a position he held until his death.
