DescriptionGroup of three memorial wall hangings, with the names and memorials for individuals who died in New York City on 11 September 2001. Each hanging is constructed like a tied comforter consisting of a pieced top, cotton batting, and a plain-woven cotton backing; the three layers are held together with tied tufts of yarn. The top of each hanging includes square blocks that were made by the family and friends of those who died. The blocks are made of muslin in different colors; they are decorated with hand-written, printed, or machine-embroidered text and a variety of appliquéd materials, including fabrics, ribbon, fabric printed with photographs, paper, paint, puff paint, glitter, small plastic objects, pins and buttons.
Wall Hanging .1: The pieced top consists of thirty blocks that are separated by blue plain-woven cotton sashing; each edge of the hanging has a narrow white border inside a wide red border. The edges are finished with red bias-cut binding. The backing consists of a panel of plain-woven cotton printed with American flags, flanked by a panel of plain-woven red cotton. A sleeve is sewn to the top back edge of the wall hanging to allow it to be hung on a wall.
