DescriptionWhitework quilt consisting of a white cotton top and backing that have been hand-stitched together in an elaborate quilted pattern. The design elements in the pattern have been filled with stuffing and cording, a technique known as trapunto. The quilted pattern consists of a small sun, or sunburst, in the center surrounded by rings of concentric borders, including a ring of petals, a scalloped line, a round border of triangles or rays, a ring of flowers and leaves on stems, and a field of quilted diamonds inside a square border of ovals. This is surrounded by an undulating vine with leaves; each curve of the fine is filled with a small flower. Each corner of the quilt has a flower inside a sunburst. The undulating vine and flowers is on a background of diagonal, parallel lines. Each edge of the quilt has a line of ovals.

The top and backing of the quilt each consist of three panels of plain-woven cotton that are sewn together. The fabric that forms the top of the quilt is finely woven and dyed white, while the fabric that forms the bottom of the quilt is coarse and undyed. The edges of the quilt are finished with white woven cotton tape.

Condition: Small to medium-sized holes are visible in several areas on both the front and back of the quilt. Stuffing is exposed on the back of the quilt. The quilt has yellowed or acquired dirt along creases down the center and at the top of the stuffed areas.
