DescriptionPieced quilt in a Log Cabin pattern. The quilt consists of a hand-stitched pieced top of plain-woven, printed cotton, or calico, batting, and a printed, plain-woven red cotton backing. Each pieced block consists of a red center square, surrounded by five concentric square borders in a variety of light and dark printed cottons. The blocks are arranged overall in a pattern of concentric diamonds alternating between light and dark color fabrics. Each block has a hand-stitched, quilted "X" through at the center. The blocks are foundation-pieced and hand-stitched together. The backing is printed red with a small black and white pattern. Each edge of the quilt has hand-stitched, red binding.

Condition: The top is split along the edges of some blocks. The top also has areas of brown dye rot. The backing has split in many areas. The binding is split and frayed.
NotesHistorical Note: According to family history, Lucy Ann Chase Brainard (1837-1915) promised to make a quilt for her son, Charles Elmer Brainard (1862-1961), if he reached age 21 without marrying. Charles turned 21 in 1883, and because he was unmarried, this is the quilt his mother made for him. Lucy Brainard later promised another quilt if Charles did marry, but that quilt does not survive.
