DescriptionPainted child's armchair in the Windsor style, with bamboo-turned posts, arm supports, and legs, and a plank seat. The back of the chair is formed by a rectangular crest rail at the top between two four-part bamboo-turned posts. Below the crest rail, there are four slender spindles that are tapered from bottom to top (two are broken). Each three-part bamboo-turned arm is supported at the front by a two-part bamboo-turned arm support. The plank seat is square with rounded corners. The sides of the seat are chamfered. Below the seat, there are four three-part bamboo-turned legs that slant out from top to bottom. All four sides of the armchair have one plain turned stretcher connecting the lower portion of the legs. The front and back stretchers are higher up the legs than the side stretchers. The armchair is painted with red paint over black paint.

Condition: The two center spindles are broken; the top of each is missing. The red paint is a later addition; it is worn or flaking over all the surfaces of the chair, revealing the black paint below.

Design and Construction Details: The crest rail is tenoned into the post on each side. The spindles are tenoned into the crest rail above and into the plank seat below. The posts are tenoned into the plank seat. Each arm is tenoned into the post at the back and is supported at the front by a tenon at the top of the arm support. The seat is supported on a tenon at the top of each of the legs. The stretchers are tenoned into the legs. All the tenons are inserted at an angle, where necessary, to give the proper slant to the posts, the arm supports, and the legs.
